Employment and Employability

To assist in your collecting information for the Courts, many First Nations and Native Friendship Centers keep statistics on the employment rate appropriate to their members, and the reason for the limited employment in the community, but remember be careful of the use of statistics.

In a recent consensus study conducted by Statistics Canada in 2021, they reported that 26.0% of the Indigenous population’s income came from government welfare programs compared to 17.5% of the non-Indigenous population.

The employment rate among Indigenous adults in 2021 was lower when compared with the non-Indigenous population (61.2% and 74.1%, respectively). Remember quoting employment statistics does not tell the Court about:

  • What the employment situation is in the community "the offender” resides in.
  • Does not tell the court about "the offender’s" employment situation and why they may not be fully employed.
